Hi Bob,

The structure below might be easier to make and would allow considerable adjustments to be made to the pole arrangement / gap -

The unit is shown lying on it's side, but it would normally be mounted vertically with the left hand edge at the bottom. It would be quite easy to add four other magnets and another backing plate on top of this structure. The magnets have their poles on the large faces and are mounted as attracting. This is similar in principle to an arrangement which has been used before. You are not limited to using square / rectangular magnets.
